In my commercial advertising class, we were given an assignment to reproduce an image from a magazine ad. We had to shoot an image with the same lighting, similar looking model, image angle, and image crop...and then the two images would be compared to see how closely we came to the original ad.
Needless to say, it was a challenging project.
This is the image I ended up with.
My exposure was 200 @ f/5 with a soft box and my Canon 20D.

Old Salem...Winkler's Bakery

These were some photos that I shot for a multi-media slideshow that I am building.
This gentleman is one of the bakers at Winkler's Bakery in Old Salem. He bakes bread, cookies, and all kinds of goodies every day. Each day they bake all these items in a wood oven. They get the wood, build the fire, and prepare the bread....then they have to get the oven at the right temperature using wood and coals.

My exposure was 125 @ f/7. I photographed with my Canon 20D.

I used the Leaf Aspus digital back on the Mamiya 645. I also used a hard light for a dramatic effect of lighting. My exposure was 1/100 @ f/8.

We were given an assignment in my multi-media class to go out photograph a location and record sound. We then had to come back and make a slideshow, edit natural sounds, and add music....and put it all together in a slideshow during class that day.

I wanted a more creative feeling cheesecake shot, so I re-shot two of my cheesecakes a little differently.

I used my Canon 20D with a lensbaby. I used a flash with a softbox on a stand.

I loved playing around with the lensbaby and getting some very different looks. I like the very selective focus that I was able to create with the lensbaby.

Flash Assignment.....again
I had an assignment that I needed to combine ambient sunlight with an off camera flash...and it still look natural.
Our instructor told us each in class to re-do and improve the original flash assignment....... This is my re-do.
This is my daughter...Kristin.
I used my Canon 20D. My exposure was f/8 with a Vivitar 285 flash on a light stand to my left.

This is my youngest son, Noah. He loves to play outside with bugs, sticks, trees..... He is all boy. So, I worked on my assignment while he was playing. Although, for the flash assignment purposes, I will be re-shooting to get better results....but Noah had fun anyway.

In commercial class, we had an assignment called a "fire drill" where we had to photograph the same vase under about 20 different looks or lighting situations. This photo is an exaggerated perspective of the vase.

This is our small format class from the summer 2007 semester. Bill Thompson (on the right) was the instructor for that class. He had many things to say to critique our photos, which was a good experience... those sayings made a lasting impression on all of us. The t-shirts that we have on in this photo have Bill's quotes about our photo's on the back of the shirts. (Examples: Is that portfolio?, my grandma could have shot that...., Is it in or out?) Thanks, Bill for stretching us all.

This is a portrait of Layne Sizemore (a first year photography student). Layne happily modeled for a portrait for an assignment for commercial class. We had to set up the studio and create lighting that would cause the background to go completely white...no shadows could show. We had to shoot it with medium format and scan it in to create a digital file. The exposure was F/8 @ 1/60 and we shot with a Mamiya 645 and used transparency film.
Layne was a lot of fun to photography. She had a lot of beautiful and fun expressions, which made my job easier. Thanks Layne for modeling for me!

The team consisted of Jonathan Andrews, Jessica Benton, Christie Bullins, and myself...Kathryn Lawson...all of are in commercial photography class together. We had to come up with a plan together, photograph a hi-key scene, low-key scene, and two other shots. Then we chose 4 images and edited as a team. The exposure was f/9 @ 1/200. We used a flash and a warm colored reflector.

I shot this for an assignment for my commercial photography class at RCC. We have self promo assignments that we can photograph any type of person, place, or thing that we would like to get experience with photographing. I was trying to photograph a dark red wine, but it was so dark that the light would not show through it to show the color. So, I ended up choosing a lighter wine to allow the light to show through. I used window light as a back light. I placed my subject on a mirror to show reflection in the mirror and I used a fill card to bounce light from the window back towards the label so it would show the label of the wine bottle. I shot this with my Canon 20D at 1/320 @ f/5.6.

This is my set-up...
I was photographing for a commercial assignment. This was my "homemade" studio. I was using window light to back light my subject (wine). I sat it on a mirror to show the reflection of the glass and the bottle underneath my subject. I also used a fill card to bounce light onto the label of the wine bottle. And finally, thanks to my youngest son, I used a container of Lego's because it put my subject at the right height to photograph and get my background at the right height.
